Personal Statement
My work is based on colour and texture observed in architectural forms from around the world.
Countries can be identified by colour – just think of the rich pinks, golds and purples that suggest India or the earthy reds, browns and blues that convey Morocco.
Country defining colours can be found in many architectural forms, be they walls, doorways, decorations or tiling.
My desire is to make marks and create textures through the use of different media. There is a certain degree of ‘Black Magic’ in this experimentation that aids the abstract element within the paintings.
The layering, working and reworking of the canvas surface is important in the same way that many of the source forms, such as walls or doors, are painted, chipped, damaged, scuffed and scratched many times over between periodic repairs and repainting. I am fascinated by the ever present thought that something is always hidden beneath the layers!
